What’s the More at Your Core?

Many of us have hopes and dreams that we have not dared to bring out into the light. We shut them down years ago for many reasons – from external pressure and judgment to inner doubt and pessimism. We just never gave them a chance. Now we might not even know what they are, only that we have an urge, an undefined yearning, for something more.

I believe we each have something to offer the world. We bring some special talent, ability, passion, or purpose – something that, when we express it, gives us joy and brightens the world around us. It may not be world-shattering, but it’s something that we do well, something we enjoy, something that gives us fulfillment. Some of us are more aware than others of this motivation for more. Some may know exactly where our purpose and passion are. Others have buried it or just not become aware of it as yet.

My search for more has been a long road of slowly feeling my way through vague urges and instincts toward expression. I spent years exploring the inner drive, toward this path of sharing what I’ve learned about personal growth and finding fulfillment through writing and coaching. I had to do a lot of learning along the way, facing and overcoming blocks to serenity and satisfaction.

Finding Your More

Each of us has that sweet spot – it could be in any or many areas – business, relationships, creativity, community, adventure, fitness, connection, environment, engineering, fashion, medicine, anything. You know yourself best, and you are best at determining what excites and interests you. If you don’t know, you can feel your way, trying things and seeing how they feel until you find the right pathway.

If you’re not yet fully aware but feel the urge for more, look for ways to hone in on your passion and purpose. Try getting to know yourself as if you were getting to know a friend – use last week’s post (Building an Insanely Satisfied Life – Start with the True You) for suggestions. Or try this exercise that might help you get to know yourself better and hone in on your “more.”

Name one area of life where you want more satisfaction. List out:

  • Why it’s important to you
  • What you think it would feel like to have more satisfaction in this area
  • Your history with focusing on this aspect of life
  • If it’s painful, what are the reasons for the pain
  • What gets in your way when you focus on improvements in this area

Blocks, resistance, and inner obstacles are natural as we seek to discover why we’re here and what brings us the most satisfaction in life. Don’t be dismayed when they come up. Rather, welcome them for the insights they bring into your inner workings. They are gifts showing you where you are blocked, and what you need to work on to move closer to your goals.

The work is worth it to get us closer to the thoughts, feelings, and actions that feel good, and help us live up to our potential. And it benefits others, because the happier we are, the easier it is for others to enjoy being around us.
