Why We Love Captain America

Why do we love Captain America so much? It’s not because of his superpowers. It’s because he never, ever compromises his values. He inspires us to hold to our integrity.

Steve Rogers is someone we can absolutely rely on to do the right thing in any situation, because he never veers from his inner compass.

He knows what his values are. And he aligns his thinking, his feelings, and his actions with those values. That is integrity.

You can be a Steve Rogers. You can be your own Captain America. It starts with knowing your values. Know what you believe in, what you’re willing to fight for, what you won’t compromise.

If your values include honesty in relationships, then stand by that value. Even when it’s difficult or even painful to be honest and tell the truth in a relationship, stick with it. When you do, others see your strength and trust that they can rely on you.

Know your values and then align your thoughts, feelings, and actions to support them. If honesty is a value for you, make sure you are honest in your thoughts and avoid lying to yourself. It might seem easier to deny or suppress truth, but ultimately that will hurt you and the people you’re in relationship with.

Honesty is one of my core values, and for a long time I lied to myself about what I wanted in a romantic relationship. I settled for less than I really wanted, and listened to the lies I told myself, because I thought if I admitted the truth, I would lose my partner and be alone for the rest of my life. I found the courage to stop listening to my own lies, and when I got honest, I left my unhealthy relationships, did the hard inner work, and healed the wounds that kept me from a healthy relationship.

Make sure your feelings and actions also align with your values. If you believe in kindness, but you have angry and resentful feelings toward someone, there’s work to do there. You are not living your value of kindness in that relationship, and that disconnect is a clue to some inner healing you need to do.

When we live our values, when our thoughts, feelings, and actions are in alignment with our beliefs, we feel good and we sleep easy. When we live our integrity, we feel comfortable in our own skin. We don’t question or doubt ourselves. We can tap into our inner knowledge and courage. It’s not always easy, but when we know and follow our values, they provide an inner map and guidance to make decisions that are right for us and others.

We love Captain America for his commitment to his integrity. You, too, can be a superhero in your own life. Develop and refine your integrity. It is an unfailing path to inner peace and power.
